The 1st Africa Agriculture and Water Dialogue (AAWaD) - (Indaba Hotel & Conference Centre, Fourways, Johannesbug, South Africa - 24 to 27 May 2011) is an African event for Africans that creates a platform that brings together various institutions, individuals from both the private and public sector , academia and NGO's, to discuss solutions on the impact of Climate change on agriculture and sustainable land and water management. It is the first of subsequent annual events that will be in various cities of the continent in the future.

Sustainable land and Water management in Africa is now morecritical today than ever before. Crop output is dwindling and water management and storage infrastructure is desperately needed more than before to fast track and sustain socioeconomic development on the Continent. Dialogue is long overdue to find solutions that charter a path into a future that guarantees sustainable food production.

What the Dialogue is seeking to achieve

The rationale for the Dialogue is short and simple: To ensure the viability, sustainability and profitability of Africa’s vital agricultural and Water sector for generations to come.

The Dialogue seeks to bring together the private sector, agriculture ministers from across the continent, a cross section of leading international experts in this field, farming and food experts, NGOs, climate experts and other top government representatives in an effort to reach lasting conclusions about Africa’s agriculture and water growth.

The Dialogue will seek to :

• Bring together a large number of Organizations in Africa that are involved in Agriculture Water Management so that they can work together

• Create effective and systematic synergies among all these organization across Africa towards a shared goal of improving agricultural productivity through better access and water management.

• Seek solution to strengthen current capacities and programmes supporting sustainable agricultural water management.

• Assess progress made in current dialogue for AgWA
-Partnership for Agricultural Water in Africa.

• Harmonize the achievement of CAADP pillars with other Agriculture water management programmes in Africa.

• Agree on effective communication strategies that
effectively speak to decision makers on the continent.

• Challenges facing African and regional food security
programmes.

• To build further and strengthen the commitments made to the purposes of the Sirte Ministerial declaration and the Sharm el sheikh declaration.

Who should attend and expected outcomes

This initiative is directed at Africa's policy makers in NEPAD's own institutions; at national policy makers in both public and private sectors; at those who influence public opinion through non-governmental institutions; at academia and think tanks concerned with Africa's development; and at officials in the development co-operation agencies of donor and multilateral bodies.

Among the aims are:

• pay immediate attention to management and use of water for agriculture so that the important task of food production is not at the mercy of fickle weather;

• in order to ensure competitiveness, invest in better infrastructure to facilitate access to rural areas and thereby reduce the costs of production, storage and extraction of produce to markets. In parallel with this, they should pay attention to trade-related capacity building so as to enhance Africa's market access;

• apply at farm level modern productivity enhancing practices, using properly adapted approaches tested under the special programme for food security;

• build readiness and response capacity to natural and man-made disasters which, if left unattended, can undermine or reverse any gains in productivity that the other interventions can achieve; and

• support research, development, promotion of adoption as an important long-term guarantor.

Post Event

The event organisers, Ikapa Media have partnered with various African Academic institutions to facilitate in all workshops and all dialogue breakaways at the event. This facilitation will culminate into the productions of a post dialogue comprehensive REPORT prepared by Africans from solutions raised by Africans during the dialogue. The REPORT will be sent and distributed to all participants at the event as well as the AU and governmental and non governmental agencies.

Financial institutions working with and in Africa will be given the report as well because of their pivotal in coming up with appropriate financial models that are Africa specific and anchor sustainable land and water management into the future. The REPORT becomes the objective basis for the 2nd Africa Agriculture and Water Dialogue in Kenya in 2012.

This work will be collaborated with the CAADP office at the NPCA together with Parnfan to ensure that alignment of their efforts in Africa is achieved with the outcomes of the dialogue.
